Museum is situated in Moscow on Bolshaya Lubjanka street. Formerly the museum was strictly prohibited for visiting by Russian and foreign citizens. During Soviet times museum consisted of several rooms displaying photos, documents, uniform, decorations, weapons reflecting the history of KGB from 1917 till the present. The museum also exhibits articles and special equipment used by agents of foreign intelligence services arrested in Russia.
One of the rooms is still used for ceremonies of swearing in and decorating FSB staff. History Hall of
Federal Service of Security of Russia (known as Chekist Hall of KGB of the USSR) was opened in September 1984. It was initiated by Y.V.Andropov, who was then the Chairman of
KGB. The Hall was created for perfecting professional training of the State Security organs employees, as well as for education of new stuff in the best traditions of special service organs. The number of visitors exceeded 60 thousand people from the opening. There were leaders and operative staff of the Central body as well as of local organs, professors and students of educational establishments of
KGB, employees of the Social countries Security organs, who used to come in groups, also deputies of Supreme Soviet of the USSR and Russian Federation.
Today four halls of the museum contain more than two thousand exhibits. The exposition begins with the display of documents connected with the beginning of the intelligence and counter intelligence activities in the Russian State to nowadays. The stuff of the museum is continually working in different archives, meeting veterans of the State Security organs, regularly obtaining information from operative divisions of Security Services activities to enrich and develope the exposition. Materials represented in the Hall are based only on real facts and documents.

Federal Museum of Boarder Guard Service was opened in 1996. Russia has the longest boarders in the world. Several halls of the museum tells about the history of creating and protecting Russian and Soviet boarders. Boarder Guards were almost always part of KGB.
