On the way to Kostroma, some 160 miles from Moscow, you pass the textile center of Ivanovo which is located 30 miles from the village of Palekh. Palekh is famous for fairy-tale paintings on black lacquered boxes.
Nobody knows a certain date of Palekh foundation. For the first time Palekh was mentioned in the first half of the 17th century, but it is clear that the settlement was before the 15th century. Handicrafts began to develop and icon-painting was among them.

The 1917 Revolution struck the fatal-blow to icon painting. As icon and mural paintings were no longer in demand many masters returned to agriculture others tried to go to other handicrafts. In early 1920 the production of papier mache items was set in Palekh.
From the very beginning of miniature art Palekh painters made generous use of folk motives. One of the mainstreams of their art drew upon folk songs, tales by Pushkin, Lermontov, Gorky, epics. Articles to be painted by masters were made of papier-mache with black shining surface. In 1935 an art school was opened for artists painting lacquered boxes. The artists of Palekh were responsible for the restoration of the murals of the Moscow Kremlin in 1946. The museum of Palekh has a large selection of their work.
VLADIMIR (1108A.D.) has a lot of ancient monuments to be proud of. The first striking monument is the Golden Gate (1164A.D.) which was not only the ceremonial gate of the city, but one of the important fortifications. Behind the Golden Gate, Vladimir rises on a semicircular hill on the riverside. Assumption cathedral (1161A.D.) was build as one domed church in 1161 but was enlarged in 1189. It was given another four domes, among other improvements. The rest of Vladimir's monuments belong to the 17-19 centuries.
SUZDAL (1024A.D.), a holy city, is in itself an entire museum - its thronging monuments, towers and domes enable the visitor to follow the history of Russian architecture from the 12th to the 19th centuries. Kremlin represents a strange mixture of church and lay architecture. It was a princely residence and (in the 16th century) an archiepiscopal seat. Nowadays, the Cathedral of the Nativity of our Lady dominates the panorama of the Suzdal Kremlin. Spasso-Efimievsky monastery dates from the 16th century. Its walls, over a kilometer long, and 12 towers create a fortress and indeed for centuries it served as a sort or the Russian Bastille, the prison for free-thinkers. Today Suzdal is more an overgrown medieval village then a town.
