The broad staircase of the entrance to the Central Armed Forces Museum has an imposing gun pointed at the sky and a T-34, the legendary Soviet tank from the days of World War Two.
The exposition on the first floor is devoted to the Russian Emperor's Guard of the 18th-20th centuries - uniforms, uniform jackets, feathers, polished metal, and gold embroidery, all authentic. Here, too, is a collection of the Russian St. Anna and St. George decorations, crosses of Russian officers, and badges of Russian regiments. Several halls recreate military landscapes with ditches, dugouts, and field kitchens. There is even a panorama of a World War Two battle, partly drawn, partly recreated. Needless to say, the greatest number of exhibits feature the victories of the Russian army. Visitors see the cabin of fighter-bomber of the Sukhoy Company, fragments of the ill-famed American spy plane shot down over Soviet territory in 1960, the decorations of the famous Soviet marshals Zhukov and Rokossovsky, and the Victory Banner hoisted over the Reichstag in Berlin in May 1945.
A separate room features the celebrated Kalashnikov assault rifle, called for its designer Mikhail Kalashnikov universally known as AK-47.
Just outside the museum there are specimens of Russian military equipment from early last century almost up to the present. The huge many-ton vehicles with guns pointed at the sky were all in action once and then were driven here to take their place among the war exhibits. They stand next to the famous BM-13 rocket launcher known as Katyusha and alongside German tanks from World War Two, and modern artillery, armoured vehicles, missiles and aircraft, such as the T-80 tank, the C-300 anti-aircraft complex, the supersonic Su-24 bomber, the MiG-29 and Su-2 fighters, and even the Soviet SS-20 missile and the American Pershing II. People interested in guns and missiles and history enthusiasts should find a visit to the museum very worthwhile.
