Tour of the Great Patriotic War Museum on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow

The grand opening of the Victory Memorial on Poklonnaya Hill, dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 was held in Moscow on May 9, 1995. The Memorial includes the 142 meter high main Victory Monument; the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, covering an area of 33,992 square meters, with an adjoining picture gallery; the Victory Park spreading over an area of 135 hectares; the Church of Great Martyr and Victory Bearer St. George, consecrated on May 6, 1995; The memorial Mosque built in 1997 in memory of servicemen-moslems perished in the War; the Memorial Synagogue to memorize Jews perished in the War and the Holocaust Memorial Museum opened in 1998; open-air exhibitions of weapons and combat equipment, including specimens of material of the navy and the railroad forces, and engineering structures.

The Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 is situated in the very center of the Victory Park. The memorial section of the Museum is the Hall of Glory where there are marble slabs engraved with the names of 11,717 participants of the war awarded the honorary title "Hero of the Soviet Union".

Around the Hall of Memory there are six dioramas depicting the biggest battles fought during the war; "The Counteroffensive of the Soviet Troops Near Moscow in December 1941", "The Joining of Fronts, Stalingrad", "The Siege of Leningrad", "The Battle of Kursk Bulge", "The Crossing of the Dnieper, 1943", and "The Storming of Berlin". The dioramas, executed by masters from the Grekov Studio of Battle Painting, cover a floor area of 1,500 square meters. People interested in the World War Two in the east front should find a visit to the museum very worthwhile.
