Trinity Saint Sergius Lavra is the residence of the head of the Russian Orthodox church and a flourishing theological college. It is located in Sergiev-Posad (former Zagorsk) about 60km outside of Moscow. The monastery was founded by St. Sergy of Radonezh in 1340 during his evangelizing crusade. The monastery became one of the most important monastic institutions, and in 1744 was given the rank of a lavra (privileged monastery). Nowadays it is a functioning men monastery and a place of pilgrimage. All churches are open for worship.

DAYS AND TIME OF THE TOUR: the tour can be done any day including week-ends and holidays from 9 AM till 2 PM.

DURATION OF THE TOUR: 5-6 hours. The return commute to Sergiev-Posad (former Zagorsk) is 3-4 hours depending on traffic. The duration of the tour inside the monastery is 1 hours and 1 hour for taking pictures and exploring the museum on your own. It is possible to stay in the monastery longer than 2 hours. Additional fee of USD40 per hour apply.

NOT INCLUDED: The monastery charges for taking pictures inside appr. USD8 or 250 roubles for video and USD4 or 120 roubles for camera (must be paid only in roubles). USD20 or 600 roubles per person for lunch at your request.

DRESS CODE: Though the monastery is interested in attracting more tourists Lavra is a functioning monastery with its own rules and traditions. To avoid any misunderstanding we advise the following. Women are recommended to wear long skirts during the tour and cover their heads with shawls inside cathedrals and churches. Men are recommended to take hats off when entering cathedrals and churches. It is advisable to keep hands out of the pockets in cathedrals and churches. It is not allowed to talk and take pictures during services.

BOOKING CONDITIONS. The tour is organized upon your request at the agreed time. We would recommend you to book the tour in advance to guarantee guide availability. No deposit is necessary to book the tour. The tour can be cancelled without penalties by sending us e-mail to oalexandrov@mtu-net.ru two days before the tour or calling us at +7-916-586-0804 one day before the beginning of the tour. Otherwise the tour should be paid in full.

The Cathedral of Assumption (1585), the Church of the Holly (1476), the Cathedral of Trinity (1422), the building of Refectory (1692) and other buildings are well preserved and maintained.
The monastery is located in the town of Sergiev-Posad 71 km (44 miles) to the north of Moscow. It is ideal for a day trip if you want to see the countryside with dachas (russian summer cottages) and have a tour of one of the oldest and most privileged monastery of Russia.
Sergiev-Posad (former Zagorsk) is, incidentally, often used as a location for costume films.
